Not just a Second Photographer

A while back, I started a blog post about why I have a second photographer in all of my wedding collections. I wanted to talk about how important it is, and how much I feel like it benefits my clients. I wrote lists and at the end, it just felt….tired.

“Seconds Photographers are great for making things less stressful”, “They get new, fun angles”, and several other true, but obvious things.

But, at the last wedding we shot, I had a total moment of clarity. The bride had a huge piece of hair fall, and it was sticking out from the side of her head. Allison, my second photographer, saw it when I didn’t. She brought it to my attention, and we immediate went over to see what we could do.

I twirled the stray hair and tried to tuck it neatly into her up do. I quickly realized a bobby pin would be necessary, and asked the group of bridesmaids if they had any extras. Before I could even get the words out of my mouth, Allison handed me a pin. Confused, I looked up at her, wondering how she could have seemingly pulled this bobby pin out of thin air. When I looked up, I saw her own hair fallen, and realized she didn’t pull it out of thin air, but from her own hair.

It was in that moment I realized, I’m not proud of the fact that I have a second photographer in my packages – I am proud that I have someone like Allison to help me serve my clients.

She often times, catches little things that I miss. When I am shooting, I’m looking at a hundred things, from checking my settings, my composition, and the direction of the light, to colors, and the pose of my clients. She is my detail person. The boutonnière on the groom is crooked, the hands look tense, or, the bride’s hair is sticking up – These little things are where Alli shines.

She is always willing to do whatever is necessary to keep my clients stress free and give me the opportunity to give them the best images I can. Whether it is laying her own cardigan down for a bride to sit on, effectively protecting her white dress from stains, or pulling a bobby pin from her own hair, Allison is a shining example of everything I would want my clients to experience with Roselle.

Not to mention, she does all of this while grabbing gorgeous images like these. Can you say Super Woman?

My point is that the idea of a second photographer is great. Getting different angles, having another set of eyes, having someone to assist the lead photographer – All of that is great…if you have someone that has the right personality to drive it all home. That’s why, I want to distinguish to all of my clients that you aren’t just getting a second photographer, you are getting Allison – which is so much more.

Alli, from me, and all of our clients, Thank you for all you do. Love you!
