Dear Megan,
I’m a new bride, and I might sound silly, but do vendors get annoyed with inquiries? Many times, when I’ve inquired with someone, it takes them a very long time to respond. I always feel like I am bothering people by asking specifics about what they offer. Is this a thing, or am I just worrying too much?
Signed,
Bothering Vendors
Dear Bothering Vendors,
I want you to read this slowly:
This is a digital age and everything is instant. If you message a vendor and they don’t respond within 24 hours, then move on.
Well, I lied. Check your spam folder. If there is nothing in there, THEN move on.
(Obviously, if it is a holiday or a weekend, be a bit more lenient)
This is something I committed to doing as soon as I started my business. I was a bride before I was a photographer, I couldn’t believe how long it took people to respond to me. I was in school, working side jobs, in a sorority, and trying to start a business. I needed someone to answer me when I was free and in wedding planning mode.
I actually I had a wedding vendor message me AFTER my wedding was over. After waiting months for a reply, they messaged me weeks after my wedding because they thought I was getting married THE NEXT YEAR! Like, you realize I’m trying to give you money, right?
Whew, okay, I’m going to try to stop ranting. But it’s crazy.
On Instagram a few weeks ago, I wrote a whole caption about how excited I am every time I get a new inquiry. I drop what I am doing, and run to my computer most of the time.
I think couples deserve that kind of enthusiasm.
If you are speaking with a vendor who makes you feel like a bother, then that person is not focused on giving you the experience you are going to want. They don’t have a servants heart.
Imagine someone making you feel like a bother on your wedding day! You aren’t going to feel comfortable. You are going to be worried the whole time – at least I would be!
I always tell my couples, you are doing this for the first time. You are supposed to have questions. We walk through everything together, from timelines, to vendor recommendations. I make sure my couples know that my proverbial door is always open for any questions – no matter how small.
If you feel like you are bothering vendors, it’s time to look for new ones. Find a vendor who shares your excitement, and guides you through the crazy. Find a vendor who you can see yourself spending your wedding day with, who will add to your happiness! You deserve that!
Warmly,
Megan
