Recently, I was asked which colors photograph best. Whew. You might want to take a seat, because this is one area where I am not short on opinions!
One of the best pieces of advice I have is that you can’t go wrong with neutrals. Gray, beige, ivory, black, and of course, my favorite, taupe. These colors are timeless, and won’t distract the viewer of your images with loud colors, so they can focus more on the two of you. Even a toned down version of a color is great! Lavender is almost always going to photograph better than a bright purple. Blush is going to photograph better than magenta. Sage is going to photograph better than emerald. Maroon is going to photograph better than scarlet.
Another reason neutrals or “toned down” colors are great, is you don’t have to worry about them reflecting on your face. One of the biggest mistakes I see, is someone wearing hot pink, or an otherwise neon color. What happens is when the sun hits your clothes, it can reflect that color back and can make your skin tone look really crazy. If you are sitting there thinking “Bummer! I LOVE my bright, super vibrant colors, but I don’t want my pictures to look bad!” – Don’t worry! Pop’s of color are not bad, and there is a great way to do it! Bring in your signature colors with bright jewelry, cute cardigans, flirty skirts, or awesome heels!
You might try finding a dress that is a solid neutral color that has a design with color on it – Like Kelly’s gorgeous dress from anthropology! With navy as the base color, it won’t reflect on your skin, but then there are fun designs to liven up the feel of the pictures! Or take a note from Miss Taylor’s session, and wear a white top with a super fun skirt to match!
This rule of which colors photograph best is true for bridesmaids too! There is nothing I love more than a neutral colored bridesmaid dress, with an epic bouquet to bring in the colors of the day.
Happy Planning!
