At 24, I can honestly say I’ve outgrown of many of the things my teenage self-identified with; daily mood swings and gaucho pants (in public) being two that I am most thankful for.
One habit that I can’t seem to break is identifying strongly with song lyrics. Okay, that doesn’t sound so bad. I mean, everyone likes music, right? Let me clarify; my constant urge to post cryptic song lyrics on social media (which I am sure you are thankful that I suppress).
Let’s be honest, a song lyric status is ranking right up there with sub-tweets and just behind hourly updates with what you are eating, and how your day is progressing.
So why do I always want to post it? Well firstly, I don’t identify as being a writer. There was a point in my life where I would have, but that too, has been out grown. I guess it is easier for me to relate to someone else’s words, than carefully crafting my own.
At the end of the day, no one outgrows emotion. You find ways to handle it, ways to mask it, ways to feign it, but it never goes away. There is something beautiful about an artist that leaves their heart in a song. I see a beauty in that rawness.
I think that attraction to rawness is what makes me love being a wedding photographer. Obviously, I’m not always posting song lyrics, but I am always posting pictures. I may not be a writer, but that is because I am capturing rawness in my images. A good song lyric is like a good picture. It can make you feel something, make you relate, and make you care.
Like when the love of your life just asked you to marry him,
Or when your Dad cries at the sight of you on your wedding day,
Or when you are totally shocked that your brother was able to make it to your wedding, despite being stationed in a different state.
Capture More Emotion in Your Photography: My biggest piece of advice for a photographer looking to capture more emotion in photography is to never put your camera down. On a wedding day, most of the sweet moments happen right after your camera goes down, because people feel more at ease. Hire second shooters to be an “emotional sniper”.
